One of the most powerful private investors in the world, Larry Fink is reaffirming his position on the merit of ESG. He stressed in his annual letter regarding BlackRock’s positioning on ESG that it is not motivated by the need to be “woke”. “It is capitalism”, he remarked, suggesting the genuine merits of upholding a sustainable portfolio.
While Fink did not address the pushback against ESG from the political right, he did provide a rebuttal against those arguing that BlackRock does not do enough on ESG affairs. Instead, he commented that it was a “defining factor” in their investment strategy.
Powerfully, Fink also sent a warning shot to those businesses which do not have strong ESG performance, stating that “access to capital is not a right.”
