Taiwan: Labor ministry official arrested on suspicion of corruption

A Ministry of Labor (MOL) official responsible for labor fund management was arrested Friday and held incommunicado on corruption charges, after he allegedly engaged in manipulating the share prices of certain companies.

Taipei prosecutors obtained a court order to hold the official in detention, after questioning him over allegations of bribery and use of labor funds to manipulate stock prices, the MOL said in a statement.

The official, surnamed Yu (游), was head of the domestic investment division of the Bureau of Labor Funds (BLF) at the labor ministry, before he was removed on Sept. 18 when the Department of Civil Service Ethics ordered an investigation into his investment practices, according to the statement.
