Responsible Business Conduct
Sitting with a coffee at your desk, listening to music on a train to work, human trafficking, modern slavery and forced labour seem far removed from most corporate lives. How are businesses involved? How may we be part of the solution, but perhaps also even part of the problem? Ultimately modern slavery is a crime of crimes; a name given to a series of illegal and violent acts, such as theft, smuggling, bribery, assault, fraud, deception, false imprisonment, rape and murder, that together lead to the exploitation of adults and children for others’ benefit. It is the business of exploitation; it is labour without pay, rights and control of oneself. Modern slavery is about increasing profits, and in some industries it is proving to be fundamental to their actual viability and profitability. At the very least, the world is repeatedly finding the use of slavery in the fishing industries, mining, construction, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, entertainment, textiles…and of course the sale of people is a business of itself.
