A former politician who took a €3 million bribe to bring Silvio Berlusconi back into power has been arrested and accused of extorting money from migrant business owners.
Sergio De Gregorio, 59, faced allegations that he was part of a gang that threatened to extort €80,000 from a Bangladeshi café owner in the Parioli district of Rome. Magistrates claimed that the former senator had a “criminal character and exceptional cunning”.
The café owner claimed that Mr De Gregorio waited in a car as his henchmen threatened him. The arrest is the latest event in his career after he gained early fame as a war correspondent.
