On behalf of ethiXbase, I would like to personally thank every single one of you for being with us today at our 2nd Asia Pacific Ethics & Compliance Summit. To over 300 speakers and delegates, many of whom had to travel and some from afar to be here today, a very warm and sincere thank you. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our supporters and sponsors for their help in making this event happen.
We are very proud to be hosting our second summit, the second in less than a year. I know that it is not usual practice to be running the same event twice in a year – but the feedback we have had from 10 months ago, along with the recent increase in bribery and corruption cases, have encouraged us to host the summit for all of you today.
2016 so far has seen a dramatic eruption of corruption and bribery scandals which have captured the attention of the public and institutions. As a result, many firms have taken serious steps and increased their defence programs and worked towards putting in place the adequate tools to fight, detect, prevent and report corruption and bribery activities – not only internally with their own employees, but also with their third party networks.
As reported on our Ethical Alliance Daily News service, the ongoing Petrobras, FIFA and 1MDB scandals have seen far reaching consequences around the world, adversely impacting countries and institutions’ reputation and interests. Even today, we continue to see arrests and financial houses being clamped down.
The market, public, shareholders and authorities are now demanding previously unparalleled levels of transparency from governments and businesses, the focus on ‘getting things right’ has never been so intense, and so real – some of it, is even being translated into how consumers lodge their votes.
In ethiXbase’s view, every one of us can help in getting things right. Most of all, it is our duty to do so as key participants, influencers and leaders of the compliance, legal and anti-corruption space.
Start by taking a look – at the market around you. Understand your organisation’s third party supply chains and your processes and help create the type of transparent, open and honest business environment you and your third party business partners wish to operate in.
Make a change – even a gradual change is a big step forward. Know where your risk areas are. Educate your employees and third parties in matters related to anti-corruption and anti-bribery. Set your policies and code of conduct and ensure everyone in your organisation be it employees or senior management, as well as third parties have signed on and adhered to your compliance principles. Achieve 100% third party due diligence, and know who you are giving business to and who you are giving key positions in your organisations to.
All of this does not have to be a complex or expensive exercise as we have been able to demonstrate to many of our customers. In fact, ethiXbase is making this possible at zero cost to your business.
Today we are joined by many of you who have done just that – helping to make changes within your own countries, economies, organisations or departments.
By joining the movement and by being here today we hope that you are as enthusiastic as we are in committing to making a change within our business environment to enhance business ethics and anti-corruption compliance.
Most of these points I highlighted will be covered throughout today’s agenda. We have carefully selected with the help of some key industry players the topics we feel are appropriate. I am sure you will find these themes insightful and that you will take away some key points from our speakers whom I personally find motivated to make a change.
Enjoy the day and I hope I get a chance to speak to as many of you as possible and learn from your experience and feedback.
Chief Executive Officer
