Lawyers for U.S. Senator Robert Menendez asked a judge to move his bribery trial from his home state of New Jersey to Washington, which they say is more appropriate.
Menendez, a Democrat, was indicted April 1 on charges of taking almost $1 million in campaign donations, luxury travel, opulent vacations and other gifts from a Florida eye doctor seeking help on business and personal matters. The doctor, Salomon Melgen, was charged with Menendez and joined him in the change-of-venue request filed Monday.
“Almost of the conduct at issue took place in the District of Columbia, and the vast majority of potential witnesses — many of whom continue to serve in the legislative and executive branches — work or reside there,” lawyers for Menendez and Melgen wrote in the filing.
