A judge on Friday denied “Fat” Leonard Francis a chance to make bail while he awaits sentencing in one of the Navy’s largest corruption scandals.
This is the second time the Singapore-based contractor at the center of the international bribery case has been denied release.
Attorney Ethan Posner — one of six Francis defense lawyers present in the courtroom Friday — argued the situation has significantly changed since bond was first discussed in late 2013. Francis, 50, has since pleaded guilty to bribery, conspiracy to commit bribery and conspiracy to defraud the United States; is in declining health; faces a much lighter sentence; and no longer has the wealth to easily abscond.
