U.K. authorities said Tuesday that they have dropped the prosecution of the chief executive of a mining firm.
The Serious Fraud Office had issued a warrant in July for Benedikt Sobotka, CEO of Eurasian Resources Group, the parent company of ENRC Ltd., after he failed to appear for questioning in relation to the agency’s probe of ENRC. The fraud office later dropped the warrant in favor of a summons to magistrates court in Westminster, but Mr. Sobotka didn’t appear there either, triggering a prosecution.
Mr. Sobotka wasn’t a suspect in the investigation, the fraud office said when the warrant was issued. His lawyers say he never was employee of ENRC. “We have always maintained Mr. Sobotka had no case to answer,” said Kevin Roberts, a partner at Morrison & Foerster LLP who represents him.
