Tunisia: French company to pay fine for widespread corruption
tunisia-live.net on November 23, 2011 reported that the French engineering company Alstom SA will pay compensation of 36.4 million Swiss Francs for widespread corruption in Tunisia, as well as in Latvia and Malaysia. Alstom was involved in the Tramway Contract where the Tunisian minister opted for the French manufacturer over another proposition from the German manufacturer Siemens. Alstom has also been involved in a corruption affair with the former Tunisian Minister of Transport, Abderrahim Zouari. Even though Alstom’s offer was more expensive, the Tunisian Ministry of Transportation opted for Alstom’s contract. The case was investigated by the National Commission for Investigation on Corruption, which released a report about it that has been recently published.
