Prosecutors have decided to investigate a direct bribery link between ex-President Lee Myung-bak and Samsung officials as part of their probe into corruption allegations surrounding a local auto parts maker, an informed source said Sunday.
They have been looking into the allegations that Samsung had paid billions of won in litigation fees on behalf of DAS, the local firm that is suspected to have created a 12 billion-won (US$11 million) slush fund for Lee. Lee was president from 2008-13.
DAS’ majority stake is held by a brother of Lee. But rumors have persisted that the former president is its real owner — a reason why investigators believe Lee might be linked to the corruption allegations leveled against the company.
