Members of South Africa’s hard-left opposition Economic Freedom Fighters have physically threatened one of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s senior ministers in parliament as tension over the government’s anti-corruption reforms intensifies.
A large group of the party’s MPs rushed and jostled Pravin Gordhan, public enterprises minister, and shouted that he was a “constitutional delinquent” and that they would prevent him from being heard as he spoke ahead of a budget vote on Thursday. Parliamentary security officers forced the MPs from the chamber.
The scenes will add to fears that the country’s second-biggest opposition party has become a tool for the enemies of Mr Ramaphosa within the ruling African National Congress as he battles to uproot entrenched graft.
