The immunity of the former Romanian Minister of Interior has been lifted on Wednesday, February 3rd. But, his prosecutor resigned the day before.
Romania’s Prosecutor General, Tiberiu Nitu, resigned on Tuesday February 2nd amid allegations that he used public security guard services that he was not entitled to. In his resignation letter, Nitu makes reference to the results of the campaign against corruption, recently commented upon the European Commission on January 27, under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism.
The use of police motorcades was investigated by his office in the case of Gabriel Oprea, the former Minister of Interior. The Minister had been using sizable police escort not only for official events, but in effect as a permanent escort or 1,607 times within ten months (January-October 2015), until a police officer died in a traffic accident while in his service on October 20th, 2015.
