The Sandiganbayan yesterday convicted two former officials of the Batangas State University (BSU) for allegedly abusing their positions for financial gains. Ernesto M. de Chavez, former president of BSU, and Rolando L. Lontoc, Sr., former vice-president for academic affairs, were each meted six to 10 years imprisonment with perpetual disqualification from holding public office. The Anti-graft court’s Fifth division found the two guilty of graft after they required a graduating class to rent caps and gowns from the officials’ rental business in 2001. Complainant Nora L. Magnaye, current BSU president and dean of the Lipa City Campus in 2001, testified in court that Mr. Lontoc indeed ordered her to collect P140 per student for the rental of gowns and caps in behalf of the university president.
