Malawi24 has obtained exclusive reports which have implicated the Malawi army chief General Ignacio Maulana in the short charging of officers deployed to peacekeeping missions in the DRC.
The reports that Malawi24 has which have been verified by at least four officers working in the army of higher and lower ranks have revealed how Maulana has been managing a syndicate that deducts illegally money meant for officers who are risking their lives to bring peace in Africa.
According to the reports in July 2014 the United Nations hiked the payment it makes to each Malawian soldier in DRC from $1028 (about K500,000) to $1332 (about K600,000) per month. Malawi officers who had been deployed in 2013 and finished their tenures in August 2014 however did not receive the new salaries for the last month they worked under the new salary meaning that from each soldier a total of $304 (about K134,000).
