zawya.com on December 14, 2011 reported that former Kuwaiti MP Saleh Ashour has been detained for refusing to pay an $18,000 bail after he was questioned by the prosecutor on corruption charges, his lawyer said Wednesday. "He refused to pay the bail because he believes the charges against him are baseless and the prosecutor did not provide solid evidence to prove the charge," Ali al-Ali told AFP. Ashour was among five ex-MPs interrogated on charges that their local bank accounts have allegedly received millions of dinars (dollars) linked to suspected corruption including money laundering. The remaining four paid the stipulated bail and were released but banned from travel. Ali added that he had submitted a request to the prosecutor general on Wednesday to exempt Ashour from paying the bail so he can be released.
