R. Manivel (49), an Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) in the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco), was caught red-handed by sleuths attached the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) while taking bribe of Rs. 10,000 to provide electricity connection to an applicant on Wednesday.
DVAC sources said that the applicant P. Balathandayuthapani (59), a tourist operator of New Siddhapudur in Papanaickenpalayam, constructed a 4,500 sq.ft. house and had applied for two electricity service connections about three months ago. He was given one connection and promised the second connection in May.
Manivel allegedly demanded Rs. 15,000 as bribe and refused to register the second application till he managed to get Rs. 5,000 from the applicant. Later, the Tangedco official delayed providing connection as he continued demanding Rs. 10,000 more.
