Anti-corruption branch (ACB) of Central Bureau of Investigation, Chennai carried out investigations with Trichy customs officials on Tuesday evening in connection to the arrests of five customs officials and a passenger a few months ago. They gathered documents in connection with the case.
A few months ago, CBI officials in plainclothes carried out a surprise check at the arrival hall of the Trichy International Airport on the intervening night of March 5 and March 6. They seized cash and bribe amounts to the tune of Rs 2.94 lakhs from there.
Further investigations revealed that five customs officials – two superintendents Sivaswamy and Ravikumar, three inspectors Dinesh Prajapati, Suresh Kumar and Avijit Chakraborthy — had been accepting bribes and not levying requisite duty for dutiable goods brought by passengers from various countries at the airport. A passenger Nagoor Meeran who bribed the officials to avoid duty on a high-end LED television set was arrested.
