Twenty-one traffic policemen —- one of them an inspector — were arrested and suspended for taking bribes amounting to not more than Rs 2,000 in the last one-and-a-half years in the city, police said.
The facts came to light during an internal scrutiny of traffic police personnel. The CBI had caught 18 traffic cops. Cases against most of them were pending in local courts. However, 12 policemen were punished after departmental probes found them guilty.
A senior traffic official said, “Corruption within the traffic police was so pervasive that a police officer caught a constable taking a bribe of just Rs 300 in February 2014. Later, an FIR was lodged against the constable.”
