A scandal engulfing Alexis Tsipras’ political mentor is roiling Greece’s leftwing Syriza party just days before a closely contested general election.
Alekos Flambouraris, who helped guide Mr Tsipras’ rise from student politician to prime minister, was under pressure on Wednesday to pull out of Greece’s election race amid allegations of conflict of interest while he was serving in the Syriza-led government.
ProtoThema, a Greek news website, claimed Mr Flambouraris, ex-minister for co-ordination and a Syriza parliamentary candidate, had maintained his majority shareholding in a technical services company in defiance of regulations banning cabinet members from owning or operating a business. Mr Flambouraris denied wrongdoing.
