A former employee of Finnish defense contractor Patria has been detained on suspicion of bribery in an ongoing probe into an arms deal in Croatia, a Finnish court official said Jan. 19. The man “was imprisoned Tuesday by the court and the police are investigating the case,” a Helsinki District Court clerk told AFP. According to a court document, Reijo Niittynen was detained at the request of Finnish police “in connection with Patria’s Croatia investigation, on suspicion of aggravated bribery.” The crime allegedly took place in January 2005 in Helsinki. “Niittynen is a former employee of Patria,” the company’s corporate communications chief Birgitta Selonen told AFP, stressing though that Patria had no official information on ongoing developments in the probe and could provide no further details.
