Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping stressed the responsibilities of leadership and the need for vigilance against corruption in his first speech as China’s new leader yesterday.
In the speech, which he made after being named chief of the ruling Communist Party, replacing outgoing party chief Hu Jintao, Mr Xi reiterated a theme of the recent party congress.
“Our party faces many severe challenges, and there are also many pressing problems within the party that need to be resolved, particularly corruption, being divorced from the people, going through formalities and bureaucratism caused by some party officials,” he said. “We must make every effort to solve these problems. The whole party must stay on full alert.”
