A recent judicial decree for the first time sketches out punishment for people paying bribes to officials.
The document, named the Interpretation on Several Issues about the Application of Law for Criminal Bribery Cases and issued by the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate on December 31, put those paying bribes into three categories: ordinary, severe and especially severe. The punishments range from detention to life in jail.
The document also listed four special conditions to be considered when punishments are determined: bribing more than three people; using ill-gotten money to pay bribes; bribing state employees in the areas such as food, production safety and environmental protection in order to conduct illegal activities that pose a threat to public safety; and bribing law enforcement and those in the judiciary.
