Botswana corruption busting agency the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) confirmed on Friday that three Journalists from the Gazette Newspaper and their Attorney of a Gaborone based legal firm were brought to the DCEC for questioning.“The questioning was in connection with Section 44 of the Corruption and Economic Crime Act (CECA) which prohibits divulging information on an ongoing investigation in relation to an investigation pertaining to Botswana Oil which, the said media outlet contravened,” DCEC said in a statement.
DCEC says the quartet was arrested following a story that the Gazette wrote insinuating that the DCEC is investigating a matter involving a deported Zambian national Jerry Chitube.
“The Botswana Gazette’s Managing Editor, Shike Olsen its Editor Lawrence Seretse and reporter Innocent Selathwa were brought in for questioning and released afternoon of 7th May 2015. Their lawyer was detained for obstructing justice,” says the statement.
