An alleged US$500,000 theft of Australian football funds by former FIFA executive Jack Warner has been referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) by independent senator Nick Xenophon.
Xenophon wrote to AFP chief Andrew Colvin yesterday asking the agency to investigate the alleged theft in 2010, while also questioning why Football Federation Australia (FFA) had not already reported the matter to police.
“I am concerned that, to date, this matter has not been reported to you by the FFA…(given) the potential ramifications for Australian officials and the FFA in terms of due diligence.”
The 2010 payment by the FFA to Warner, and its failure to report its alleged theft, has dogged the Australian football body for years and has been thrust back into the spotlight by the dramatic charging of Warner by United States authorities.
